Dopo aver trascorso gli ultimi tre anni in prigione per aggressione, il misterioso Shadow Moon torna in libertà in seguito alla morte della moglie Laura in un incidente stradale. Senza altre opzioni, Shadow accetta l’offerta di lavoro di un uomo che si fa chiamare Wednesday, un truffatore in cerca di qualcuno che collabori ai suoi affari e lo protegga, scoprendo ben presto che un antico dio scandinavo si cela sotto le sue spoglie mortali. Wednesday sta attraversando l’America per riunire vecchie divinità bibliche e mitologiche che, senza più credenti, ora si fingono persone comuni. Con queste è determinato a scatenare uno scontro finale con quei nuovi dei – denaro, tecnologia, media, fama, droga e molti altri – che sempre di più affascinano la società moderna.
